She came from heaven to the Texas plains
3 months early, just in time for the rain
They kept her in a small box, in the oven warm
Brought a lot of joy to that old Texas farm
She liked to help in the kitchen, especially making pies
Said her prayers to Jesus every single night
Youngest of three sisters, father had passed on
Mother and her grandma raised them all alone
She was a Texas flower, she was a breath of spring
Carried a piece of heaven hidden underneath her wings
She fell in love to early in grandma’s eyes
Eloped to California with a gangly guy
She prayed a lot to Jesus to make it all alright
They worked real hard there and made themselves a life
Had a couple of children, made it through the Great War
They were the light of her life along with the Lord
Never forgot her family back on that Texas farm
Kept the whole flock embraced in her loving arms
She was a Texas flower, she was a breath of spring
Carried a piece of heaven hidden underneath her wings
As her life unfolded and loved ones slipped away
Always kept her eye on the beauty of each day
She always thought of others first, loved us all from the start
Grandkids, cousins, great-grand children, kept ‘em all in her heart
She loved to say, “I love you darlin”, whenever she had the chance
Even when we disagreed she’d give me that loving glance
She really loved this old world but it was time to go
She faded like the evening star but she left a rosy glow
She was a Texas flower. She was a breath of spring

Remember being young in 1962
Fly-by’s over Cuba photos from that U-2
The look on Mothers face as she came through the front door

I went out on the front lawn and stared up at the sky
And hoped that somewhere out there was the Catcher In The Rye

It’s not enough that there’s no rain food or running water
But some guy’s got to make it worse and have a bloody slaughter
